Ariel Pink and Weyes Blood team up to deliver an ode to Marfa, Texas.
American label Mexican Summer has announced that they will release an EP entitled Myths 002 in conjunction with the Marfa Myths Festival in late January 2017, on which alternative pop deities Ariel Pink and Weyes Blood have collaborated to give an ode to the legendary town. This is not the first time the duo collaborates (they have previously worked together on Pink’s 2012 album Mature Themes as well as featuring together on Mild High Club’s track “The Chat” in 2015), and if their previous track record can point us in any direction, we can be sure to expect greatness.
The first single, “Tears On Fire”, dropped a couple of days ago, and rather unsurprisingly, it not your everyday pop song that the eclectic duo has created. On the contrary, it’s a delightfully weird little thing to experience as we hear a classically Ariel Pinkuesque singer songwriter pop song intertwined with Weyes Blood singing the chorus in a baroque voice. The result is something that doesn’t conform to expectations of a pop song, which we on the other hand never really expected when taking the two artists previous output into account.
Ariel Pink made a name for himself when he was signed to Animal Collective’s label Paw Tracks after having given the band a demo of his work at one of their shows. He subsequently released heaves of quality albums before forming his avant-garde band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. This is where things really started to take off, with the band releasing albums such as the aforementioned Mature Themes. He also released his solo record pom pom in 2014 to much critical acclaim, but has since stated that he doesn’t intend to break up the band.
Weyes Blood, isn’t the same household name on the alternative pop circuit as her EP counterpart (yet), but is nevertheless still a very successful artist, having released hailed albums such as The Innocents in 2014, as well as gem Front Row Seats to Earth in 2016 (read our review here). Not including Myths 002, she is also set to release yet another full-lengther sometime this year, so it’s looking to be a pretty promising year for all lovers of dreamy pop.
Myths 002, as the name indicates, is the second release by Mexican Summer that celebrates the legendary Texan town of Marfa. The town, known for its artistic community (immortalized by films such as Larry Clark’s Marfa Girl, to name one) has been celebrated on critically acclaimed EP Myths 001, a collaborative effort by Connan Mockasin and Devonté Hynes (also known as Blood Orange and Lightspeed Champion). Pink and Blood are therefore in fine company, but considering their respective musical talents, they have all the opportunities in the world to outshine their predecessors. Furthermore, Mockasin is also due to make a guest appearance on Myths 002, along with names such as MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden.
