Pit - Colombe Music
Kindness for Weakness is an original release that managed to stay true to the underground.
On May 6th earlier this year, Homeboy Sandman blessed us with his latest release entitled Kindness for Weakness. It is the artist's sixth studio album and his third release on Stones Throw records. The third music video off the album entitled 'Eyes' was released two weeks ago and was produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow and directed by Pace Rivers.
Homeboy Sandman packed this 14 track album with melodic instrumentals as well as eclectic productions like he accustomed his audience to. For this album, the 35-year-old emcee from Queens, New York, who was known for his frenetic style from his previous releases, seems to have found some peace of mind and seems to be on a more introspective journey. However, you will note that his poetry did not lose any of its edge and still has a strong message. The artist does not shy away from making fun of delusional fans and he even takes aim at the Huffington Post. 'Talking (Bleep)' was the first music video off Kindness for Weakness and is one of the more spiteful and trenchant songs off the record on which he went for spoken-word.
Through the 39-minute runtime of the album, Homeboy Sandman masterfully unfolds his story telling skills over experimental instrumentals with a wide variety of featurings and productions including artists such as Aesop Rock, yU, Large Professor and RJD2 just to name a few.
The album is not a conventional Hip-Hop release and for example 'Gumshoe' has no lyrics, but you will also find classical samples like Johnny Hammond's “Call on me” on the song “God”. The album is a suitable release for anyone who wants to get into innovative and original Hip-Hop and might not be accessible to everyone, but if you give it a close listen I'm sure you will be able to fully appreciate Homeboy Sandman's creativity, playfulness and lyrical dexterity.
Homeboy Sandman is currently touring the U.S. with Aesop Rock to promote their collaborative EP Lice which was released in November last year. Homeboy Sandman has two more gigs scheduled in Japan and New Zealand over the Summer.
Make sure to follow him on Facebook for any news and updates and by the way, Lice is available for free download here.
