The Oslo based Hip-Hop label just dropped their Streetgear bundle.
There have already been a few releases and announcements of releases for 2017, but the Streetgear bundles weren't on our radar until recently. The Oslo based Mutual Intentions collective must have been quite busy bringing us these three seven-inches, two cassettes and an LP on Friday 27th of January.
Mutual Intentions is a “crew and label unified by their work in music and visual arts” as they put it. The crew is made up of musicians such as Ivan Ave, Fredfades, Yogisoul and Sraw, photographer Moe Chakiri, videographer Erik Treimann, designer Hans Jørgen Wærner and manager Stian Nicolaysen. The musicians all seem to find inspiration in the same places, from jazz to rock and anything in between they can get their hands on to make beats, samples and scratches. Streetgear is truly a collective effort as everything up to the handprinted totebags has been meticulously thought through by the gang and it all comes with a whole bunch of interesting guest appearances.
Fredfades contributes among other things a solo 7 inch, a collaborative 7 inch with Sun Raw and an LP with Mest Seff as Tøyen Holding. Fredfades' solo 7 inch is entitled Always, has two tracks and was released on the Mutual Intentions label. On the first track, the Norwegian producer has the support of none other than Ivan Ave, The Koreatown Oddity & MED who rap over his fresh beat mixing regular keys, a crazy synthesizer and a retro bass over one of his trademark 12-bit beats. On the second track, he is accompanied by Nanna B on a laid back and funky beat.
Fredfades' collaborative 7 inch is released with Sun Raw and is entitled The Maxi-Single and was released on the King Underground record label. Both songs feature Planet Asia and on the second one rapper Waz also chips in for the chorus woth a hook. It is a gritty record that has interesting 12-bit beats and unique loops, of which the duo alone know the secret. It feels like Fredfades and Sun Raw have been making music for ages although the latter, from Stockholm, Sweden, joined the Mutual Intentions family in 2015. They both complement each other very well and it is no surprise the pair are currently working on a joint album. In addition, Sun Raw will also release his debut album Beat Weeks later this year.
With fellow Norwegian rapper Mest Seff, Fredfades also released an eponymous LP as Tøyen Holding. The 14 track record is exclusively in Norwegian and features KingSkurkOne, Pumbish, Ivar Strå and instrumentalist Kristoffer Eikrem. Mest Seff skilfully raps over Fredfades' 12-bit beats and loops inspired by modern soul and jazzrock. Although only locals will be able to grasp that the album is about their lifestyle and the ups and downs that come with it, the record is easy to get into and a real pleasure to listen to.
Along with the aforementioned 7 inch, Sun Raw also released a three track 7 inch by himself, although this time under the alias of Sraw, entitled In The Smog. On the first track, Tha Connection are on the mic. On the second track, it is L.A.'s own Blu who blesses the music with his storytelling and the third track is an instrumental. The title track was recorded and produced over 10 years ago as the project died and resurrected a couple of times over the years it has been in the making. Taking this into account, Mutual Intentions must be proud that they could even release it in the first place.
Yogisoul's By Nights, which is included in the bundle as a cassette, is his debut album. The record has guest appearances from Ivan Ave, Awon, LumiHD and Dialate just to name a few. It is an interesting and laid back conceptual record that got released on the King Underground record label. The album has a dreamy atmosphere and a certain warmth which is Yogisoul's distinctive sound he achieves by mixing crispy drums with analog synthesizers and thick baselines.
Last but not least included in the bundle is the Mutual Intentions #2 cassette. The 18 track cassette features contributions, among others, from Suff Daddy, Jawn Rice, Deckdaddy, Ol' Burger Beats, Sofie, Awon, Jeremiah Jae, Oliver the 2nd, MNDSGN, Chester Watson and Kristoffer Eikrem, other than from the whole Mutual Intentions crew. The sequel to their #1 cassette released in June 2015 follows in its footsteps and does not disappoint with the various lyrical contributions over its sometimes more intricate, sometimes more soulful and jazzy instrumentals.
The bundle, as any of the records contained in it, is a real treat for any old-school hip-hop fan and can only be recommended. The bundle is available in different formats. The Deluxe Bundle contains all the above-mentioned records, which come in a limited edition totebag, and as of today, there are 9 bundles remaining. The regular Bundle is an edition of 100 totebags containing the Fredfades Always 7 inch, the Sraw In The Smog 7 inch, the Mutual Intentions #2 cassette and Fredfades and Mest Seff's Tøyen Holding LP. There is also a Mini Bundle, which is an edition of 50 totebags containing the Fredfades 7 inch, the Sraw 7 inch and the Mutual Intentions #2 cassette. You can also buy each item separately on the Mutual Intentions and the King Underground Bancamp pages and / or get a digital copy.
