The duo from the Twin Cities is back with their bluesy instrumentals and gifted storytelling.
If track number 8 on our Mixtape #009 struck a chord with you or if you like old school hip-hop in general, you are in for a treat with Atmosphere's latest release. Their new album Fishing Blues came out on August 12th earlier this year via Rhymesayers Entertainment and here's their latest video for 'Shit we've been through'.
Atmosphere are a two piece band from Minneapolis, Minnesota made up of rapper Sean Daley going by the stage name Slug and DJ/producer Anthony Davis going by the stage name Ant. They kicked off their career in 1997 with their first official album and are not new to the scene, Fishing Blues being their eighth studio album. They have also released a fair number of EPs and worked on various collaborative projects such as Felt with rapper Murs or Atmosphere Routine an album released with Mr. Dibbs.
Fishing Blues is an 18 track LP spanning roughly over an hour and eight minutes. On the album, Slug rhymes with his usual ease over Ant's now almost trademark bluesy instrumentals. On Fishing Blues, Slug comes across a little more mature in his word choice compared to the “asshole” he once was, as he has described his younger self in the past. He rhymes about pretty much anything from validation, to food, money and even love. On 'Everything', he raps about how thankful he is for the life he has been able to live. These subjects seem to be of a lighter nature, but he also addresses contemporary issues with his storytelling skills such as police brutality on 'Pure Evil'. In addition, the album features guest appearances from some heavy weights of the independent rap scene such as MF DOOM, Aesop Rock, deM astlaS and Kool Keith.
As a teaser for their new album, Atmosphere also recorded 6 videos with Sway Colloway that aired through July and August. You can see them fooling around, fishing, answering a whole bunch of questions about Fishing Blues, the recording process, the various tracks and life in general. You can watch the first episode here.
Atmosphere kicked off their Freshwater Fly Fishermen US tour last week which will last until the beginning of December (more info here). Make sure to catch them if you are around and you don't want to wait too long to get your tickets as some shows are already sold out. For any further news and updates makes sure to follow Atmosphere on Facebook or drop by every now and then on their official webpage at Rhymesayers Entertainment. Their album is available for streaming on Spotify and on YouTube with a 360° video where you can see them fishing. Let's hope they will also make it to other parts of the world to promote Fishing Blues.
