Wall Of Death are a three piece psychedelic rock band from Paris, France that formed in 2010. Their latest release from March earlier this year on the Innovative Leisure record label is entitled Loveland. This is the band's second album after their 2012 release Main Obessions on the French Born Bad Records. The first single off the album is the eponymous “Loveland”.
Wanting to explore new frontiers and to take a different direction from their first record, the band teamed up with Hanni El Khatib, a San Francisco-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Hanni, who also happens to be one of the founders of Innovative Leisure, met the trio on tour in 2013 and took them under his wing for this album which was recorded at the Jazzcats studio in Long Beach, California. Wall Of Death are composed of Garbiel Matringe who plays guitar and sings, Brice Borredon who plays keyboards and sings and Adam Ghoubali who plays drums.
Although the record only has 10 tracks, it spans over almost 47 minutes and takes you away to the band's own psychedelic dimension. With their vintage synthesizer, organ, electric piano and their voluptuous mellotron, Wall Of Death pushed the limits of the psychedelic rock genre quite successfully and gave Loveland a totally unique sound. The trio lists as influences for their music bands from the 70s such as Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, Jesus & Mary Chain and King Crimson, as well as more contemporary artists such as Radiohead and the Creation Records roster. With their at times soaring and at times very deep vocals over their acid-tinged, warm, powerful and luscious instrumentals, the band makes Loveland feel like a trip through a flamboyant dream. The band's guitarist described it as “the last steps you do in the desert; dry and exhausted, one minute before dying”. And even though this is quite a tormented depiction of their work, if you listen closely, you will be able to decipher a lingering joyfulness and lightness throughout the record as it is the case for their second single 'For A Lover'.
Wall Of Death will be featured on the soundtrack of Alain Guiraudie's movie Rester Vertical (Staying Vertical) which was selected for the main competition of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and which is due to be released on 24 August later this year. Further, the band seems to be planning a tour in France as they have been announcing concert dates for the months of September and October via Twitter the last couple of weeks.
