Discover our favourite artists playing at this year's edition of the Francofolies de la Rochelle.
Since 1985, the French festival Les Francofolies presents emerging and well-established acts in the beautiful city of La Rochelle. Taking place every year in July, the festival commits to promoting Francophone artists and music to a wide audience of music lovers.
To help up-and-coming French artists develop and expand their audience, the festival implemented the 'Chantiers des Francos' – a program aiming to improve the artists' live performances, apprehend their entry into the music industry and to foster their professional insertion. Artists that have participated to the program 'Chantier des Francos' include Christine & The Queens, Cali, Rover, ZAZ, Cascadeur, François and the Atlas Mountains, and many more...
Out of the kindness of our hearts, we've decided to hand-pick our favorite artists from the 'Chantier' playing at this year's edition of the Francofolies de La Rochelle (taking place from the 13th to the 17th of July). Just for you.
A soft and mellow voice, sincere and poetic lyrics, minimalistic and tasteful arrangements: Bessa's artistic universe is comforting and beautiful. Her music reminds us of London Grammar, Feist, or even France Gall, tied together with jazzy and soul influences. Her very promising first EP, eponimously-titled Bessa (released on Capitol in January 2016), gave us a delicious foretaste of what she's capable of.
If like us, you can't wait to hear more, see you at the Théàtre Verdière on Sunday the 17th at 5.30pm.
Sages Comme Des Sauvages
Ismal and Ava from 'Sage Comme Des Sauvages' take us musical voyage from Africa to Greece, through the French Reunion, with their intriguing compositions of mixed influences. Their first album Largue La Peau, in which you can hear the Brazilian cavaquinho, guitar, violin, as well as Bouzouki is a true gem!
The French-American-Greek-Belgian duo's show at the Théàtre Verdière on Saturday the 16th at 5.30pm is definitely not to be missed.
We met Cléa last February at Marcel & Clémentine, a beautiful Café in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, to shoot a Colombe Session. She seemed a little shy at first, but soon got comfortable and delivered a stripped down version of her hit track ‘Retiens mon désir’. Her latest track ‘Non Mais Oui’, released on the French indie label Midnight Special Records is a first taste of a really exciting album, coming out in late 2016. Cool!
Catch Cléa Vincent live at Théàtre Verdière on Friday the 15th at 3pm.
Pharaon de Winter
Everything started when Maxime Chamoux, aka Pharaon de Winter, grew tired of indie-rock: ‘… I was looking for something different... I wanted to sing in French. I wanted to play nicer chords. During a couple of months, I was wondering which shape or colour these songs could adopt. One day I had an epiphany, and it was called 'Pharaon de Winter' – from this point, all the music I liked gathered in a precise frame’.
His brand new EP Pointillism has just been released on Because Music on the 8th of June and we highly recommend it!
Pharaon de Winter will play at Théàtre Verdière on Friday the 15th at 5.30pm.
