The American folk multi-instrumentalist’s next release, Are You Serious, comes out April 1st on Loma Vista/Decca Records
Andrew Bird’s pizzicato violin loops, airy vocal lines and crystalline whistling have become instantly recognizable since the singer’s solo career blossomed with his 2009 success, Noble Beast. He’s since collaborated with countless musicians, all the while pursuing other eclectic projects, such as recently scoring Zach Galifianakis’ TV series Baskets on FX.
With his previous album, Echolocations: Canyon, Bird had gone more experimental than before, recording in the Coyote Gulch canyons of Utah as a site-specific exploration of geography and music. Although Bird’s songwriting style is known for play on words and often elusive subject matter, ‘Capsized’ has a definitely more grounded quality, lyrically and musically speaking. It’s a groove-infused, 70’s-sounding number, calling to mind Bill Withers, as well as Brothers-era Black Keys, while keeping Bird’s incredible violin-playing as a staple.
Are You Serious is a highly personal record, with themes ranging from marriage and recent fatherhood to illness and the stress of city life, which you can listen to Bird discuss in this NPR interview. So far, ‘Roma Fade’ and ‘Left-Handed Kisses’, the two other songs shared off the forthcoming album, give us a glimpse into a more straightforward, song-oriented direction, with key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills. The songwriter has called on producer Tony Berg (PIL, Charlie Winston, Blake Mills), and artist John Baldessari for the cover art of what is promising to be one of his most important albums to date.
