Enter the humble and touching world of Anderson .Paak with his brand new soulful 3rd album – Malibu – out since January 2016.
Before understanding Anderson .Paak, one needs to take a few steps back in time and look at where this guy and his music come from. Brandon Paak Anderson was born in Oxnard, California, 1986. His mother was a South Korean farmer and his dad worked for the US Air Force, and later as a mechanic, before spending the rest of his life in prison. “I didn’t see him again until he was being buried,” Paak told Consequence of Sound in a 2015 interview.
His very first musical experience was playing drums at his local church as a child. Before focusing on music on a professional level, he worked on a marijuana farm in Santa Barbara and lived on the streets for a while with his wife and kid. In 2011, the singer slowly started integrating the Los Angeles music scene, and began working on his first album. The pain and rough times he went through in his early age are expressed in Malibu, which makes it his most personal project to date.
Thanks to financial and moral support from Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), Brandon got a job as a videographer/producer and found the time to finish his first album O.B.E Vol.1, which came out in 2012. In 2013, he released Cover Art, a 6-track EP consisting of covers such as Seven Nation Army or Blackbird. He recently started getting a lot of attention by being featured on six tracks in Dr. Dre’s Compton, and on two tracks in The Game’s The Documentary 2.5. Towards the end of last year, he teamed up with Knxwledge and gave birth to Nxworries. A few weeks before the release of Malibu (2016), the two friends released Link Up and Suede (EP) on the famous Stones Throw Records label.
