Calling all lovers of motion graphics and catchy tunes: here's something you don't want to miss!
We recently came about New-York-based band A Love Like Pi ’s catchy new album, – III –. The fantastic American trio has found a smooth way of bringing pop tunes and electro-rock together, and has given birth to what feels like a refreshing blast of energy in the new year’s musical scene.
The production for “Wide Awake”, their most recent music video, probably deserves as much praise as the band does. The video was directed by Min Liu, an extremely talented Taiwanese motion graphics designer and animator who has already done some impressive work, which you can find by visiting her Vimeo profile and scrolling through. Not only did she manage to build an aesthetically pleasing world for us to discover, but she also really created the visuals to match the song. It makes so much sense when you watch and listen to it, that it almost feels like the song and the video were made simultaneously. As the description says, it’s a real “journey of life”.
But let’s get back to the band and their bouncy, flawless track that won us over in the first place. There’s a lot to say for this song: the vocals in the chorus, the general build-up of the song, the melodies, and that infectious pop/rock/electro-vibe which will make you dance on your office chair, or at the very least nod your head back and forth. There are some similarities with all the good things we’ve heard from bands like C2C, 20syl, Ratatat, or even Daft Punk. If "Wide Awake" really hit the spot for you, you should also check out "How Low" from the same album on their Soundcloud. Overall, what we’re dealing with here is a very clever and balanced delivery that combines – a lot of – energy and smart songwriting for our pleasure and entertainment.
