Listen to this 19 year old rapper/singer steal the show.
When New Jersey-based rap collective 070 released their first album The 070 Project: Chapter One last week, waves started to make their way through the world of hip hop. The album showcased some fine talent, with rappers PHI, J Sebastian, Tree Safari and Ralphy River among others showing that they know how to spit some sick bars over quality beats. However, with all due respect, each and every one on that album were outshined by the crew’s leader: Shake. The 19-year old husky-voiced rapper and singer completely stole the show with her performance, not only exhibiting a musical talent but also demonstrating her lyrical skills on songs such as ”Through the Speakers”.
For the real hip hop aficianado, Shake will not be a completely new aquaintance. For obvious reasons (she’s only a teenager, remember) she hasn’t been around for years, but the 070 Project: Chapter One isn’t the first release she has put out. Not only did she do a feature on Lil Yachty’s single ”Rewind”, she has also released some bangers of her own lately, ”Sunday Night” and ”Honey” standing out as two tracks with some far-reaching hit-quality.
The maturity of the songwriting as well as the not-so-obvious-but-still-obvious star quality of her voice are the two things that stand out in her songs. The production, always genre bending, always with a nod to the trap-scene, complements her work perfectly, creating a new approach towards the kind of slurry rap that has been ever so present in the hip hop conscience the last couple of years. Rappers like 2Chainz, Drake and Yung Thug spring to mind, while Shake’s singing can’t help but remind one of artists such as Tinashe or Rihanna, no matter the huskiness.
The state of New Jersey has produced some seriously successful rappers over the years. For example: Redman, Wyclef Jean, Fetty Wap, Lauryn Hill all stem from NJ, not to mention one of the inventors of the game: The Sugarhill Gang. If we give her a couple of years, we fully expect Shake to be on that list.
If you want to listen to more of Shake’s music, you can find it on Soundcloud as well as on Spotify. We also suggest you follow her on Facebook and Instagram as well as give her crew 070 some love on Soundcloud.
