The first release of a promising young emcee who sounds like an OG.
On July 15th earlier this year, A-F-R-O and Marco Polo teamed up to release an EP on Duck Down Music entitled A-F-R-O POLO. This is A-F-R-O's first record, which explains why this might be the first time you hear of him, but he has been getting more and more attention recently and I can assure that you won't be wasting your time. Check out the video released by Complex for the song 'Swarm' featuring Pharoahe Monch.
A-F-R-O Polo is the collaboration between a talented young emcee going by the name of A-F-R-O, which stands for All Flows Reach Out, and a more experienced producer going by the name of Marco Polo. A-F-R-O is an 18 year old California based emcee who was only 17 when his first freestyle video went viral. He entered a freestyle competition organized by R.A. The Rugged Man, who the artist claims has been his favorite rapper since he was a teenager. Needless to say, the Kid blew R.A.'s mind with his performance. He reportedly said 'This kid won the contest before it even ended'. R.A. then met up with A-F-R-O and they have been touring and working together ever since. The other half of this project is Marco Polo, a Canadian producer currently based in Brooklyn, who had his breakthrough on Masta Ace's 2004 LP A long Hot Summer for which he produced 'Do It Man'. He then went on to work with artists such as Kool G Rap, Sadat X, Talib Kweli, Buckshot, KRS-One and Boot Camp Clik just to name a few.
A-F-R-O POLO is an 8 track EP spanning over 25 minutes during which A-F-R-O gives us an insight into his talents as a lyricist. Heavily influenced by what he calls 'the OGs of hip-hop', the emcee mastered Marco Polo's old-school vibe productions remarkably well with his deep voice. Whether it be on 'Nightmare on Fro street' or 'Lair of the Black Worm' - productions going into the horrorcore genre -, on 'Long Time Coming', which uses a smooth piano instrumental coupled with a nice drum kit, or on 'Use These Blues', a quieter R'n'B influenced track featuring Eamon, A-F-R-O always adapts to the various cadences with his lyrics and steady flows. It is quite astonishing and noteworthy how disciplined A-F-R-O sounds on the EP leaving the impression one is dealing with a true rap veteran.
It is always quite hard to predict how artists evolve and develop, but I would say that this record can be considered as an exquisite appetizer for what is to come from A-F-R-O as he recently revealed in an interview that he was working on his first full-length album, to be released around the turn of the year. In the meantime, and to keep you waiting, A-F-R-O's latest release is a song entitled 'We Got That' featuring Scrooge and produced by Mr. Green.
The A-F-R-O POLO EP is available for streaming on Spotify and on Youtube. If you like what you heard and read and you are located in Europe, you should try and catch him live in the next couple of months as he will be on a small tour in November and December.
