CLMB MXTP #023

‘Hmmmmmm’: the sound that comes out every time it hits the spot! Not the ‘Hmm’ we use when hesitating in the middle of a sentence, or that uncertainty 'Hmm'. I’m talking about the ‘Hmmmmmm’ that has a deep bass to it, that vibrates in the back of your throat…

1.     SZA - Child's Play (feat. Chance The Rapper)

2.     Bas - Clouds Never Get Old

3.     Kembe X - Talk Back Produced

4.     Isaiah Rashad - Heavenly Father

5.     A$AP Rocky - Everyday (Feat. Rod Stewart & Miguel & Mark Ronson)

6.     Mac Miller - Time Flies (Featuring Lil B)

7.     Kendrick Lamar – Alright

8.     ScHoolboy Q - THat Part (feat. Kanye West)

9.     The Internet- Just Sayin/I Tried

10.  Vic Mensa- 16 Shots

When discovering Cambodian music, and more specifically artists from the 50s, 60s or 70s, one must take a closer look at the history of the Kingdom of Wonder. As most of you will know, a genocide was carried out by the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1979 in which an estimated 1.5 to 3 million people died.

During this time, musicians had no choice but to hide their identities. Some of them enlisted to play ‘revolutionary’ music for the Khmer Rouge regime but even most of these artists did not survive. Artists and musicians were subjected to the most extreme form of music censorship. Music itself was banned and estimations say that up to 90% of Cambodia’s musicians were killed during Pol Pot’s rule.

This mixtape is dedicated to Sin Sisamuth who is considered as the "King of Khmer music" around the world. Sin Sisamouth, along with Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron, Mao Sareth and other Khmer artists, was part of a thriving pop music scene in Phnom Penh that blended elements of Khmer traditional music with the sounds of rhythm and blues and rock and roll to reach a westernized sound.

Sisamouth died during the Khmer Rouge regime under circumstances that are unclear. Fortunately, his music remains.

I recommend watching The Missing Picture.

1) Touch Sreynich - SaRaVan Sliek Khyal DonDob Mek

2) Sin Sisamuth - សន សសមត - Mdech Ban Saarch Dak Knhom

3) Pan Ron - Rom Ago Ago

4) Ros Sereysothea & Sin Sisamouth - Khork Jet Sneah Srey

5) Unknown Artist – Unknown Title

6) Pen Ron - Chet Del Srolanh

7) សនហកនងពលរតរ - Sneha Knong Pel Reatrey (Remix from Gem on the run OST)

This mixtape is mainly about robberies, drug deals, encounters with cops, street life and whatnot. I wanted to put something together that was badass, but without being too “gangsta” and this is what I came up with. In the end among these 13 tracks, some are a little bit smoother and others a little bit rougher, but just give the mixtape a listen and you might be able to find what you need.

1. Ill Bill - Gangsta Rap

2. Immortal Technique - Industrial Revolution

3. Jedi Mind Tricks - Nada Cambia

4. Action Bronson - The Madness

5. Pete Rock - Head Rush (feat. RZA & GZA)

6. JuJu Rogers - Officer

7. Freddie Gibbs - Harold’s

8. MED, Blu & Madlib - Finer Things (feat. Phonte & Likewise)

9. Lewis Parker & Eastkoast - Bank Robbery

10. Jaylib - The Heist

11. Beastie Boys - Professor Booty

12. DOOM - Gazzillion Ear

13. Quasimoto - Bad Character

This playlist reflects my ongoing love affair with Turkish and Brazilian music from the 70’s. Also featured are tracks from Africa, Japan, the US/UK and France and one i’d like to personally share, my grandfathers rendition of ‘My Way Of Life’ recorded on a 2 track in a hotel lobby in the 60’s.

Sometimes I find myself not listening to music that often throughout the month, but there will be that one discovery which I keep coming back to. Most of these songs have been those that I don’t let go until i’ve overplayed them.

1.    Gurbet - Özdemir Erdoğan

2.    Onda - Cassiano

3.    Gunese Don Cicegim - Ersen

4.    Calypso Rock - Original Tropicana Steel Band

5.    Black Room - Jun Mayuzumi

6.    My Way Of Life - Akademik

7.    Adeus Bahia - Dora E Walter

8.    New life - A. Perry/L. Delacour

9.    Oh Yeh Soweto - Teaspoon & the Waves

10.  Kumala - D.R. Hooker

11.   Breakdown Suite - Serge Gainsbourg

12.  Moss Garden - David Bowie

I have a playlist for everything. I have a playlist for the Monday morning, for when I run, rainy days (I used that one way too much this spring), I even have a playlist for the book I am reading. But the one I prefer by far is the one I listen to while driving to the beach.

I leave at sunrise, so I need to start slowly with a nice Allan Kingdom. The next song is the first Schoolboy Q song I discovered. For those who know me, Schoolboy Q is part of all my playlists. After that, my most recent discovery: a featuring between French Montana and Kodak Black, for a song that will be my 2016 summer anthem. Then, we have IshDARR with “Too Bad” and Action Bronsons “Easy Rider”. For those of you who haven’t watch the video clip from Easy Rider, leave this blog for 5 minutes and come back. You will understand why this is one of my top driving song. After that, we are moving to the two old school songs from this playlist, two classics: Notorious BIG with “Big Poppa” and Dilated Peoples with “Worst comes to worst”.

Now we are already halfway through the ride. I need something to boost me. I discovered Viceroy a few years ago, he's a DJ from San Francisco, whose moto is “summertime all the time”. Once a month, he provides the world with a nice sunny remix of a hip-hop song. Because we are riding, I selected “Ride with me” by Nelly. To follow this catchy West-Coast vibe, I want you to discover 100s, an artist who looks like Snoop Dogg, and who sounds like a groovy Snoop Dogg. We will then stay in LA with Anderson Paak and Knwledge: Their common project, NxWorries, gave birth to two crazy songs and I decided to pick “Link Up”. Pell is a rapper from New-Orleans, and “Eleven:11” is the main song of “Floating while dreaming”, his first project. The album name says it all… Just listen. Let’s give Chance the Rapper a minute in this playlist, he deserves it. Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment is a band project he has and the voice of Chance always sends good vibes. If we give him some time, we also need some Childish Gambino. The beach is now close. “Telegraphe Ave” is the perfect song when I drive. I like to open the window, feel the salty wind and follow Childish story. Finally, Kweku Collins will close this playlist. I am tired of driving; I can see the ocean, the sun, the sand… I'm arriving home.

1. Allan Kingdom - The Ride

2. Schoolboy Q - There He Go

3. French Montana - Lockjaw (feat. Kodak Black)

4. IshDARR - Too Bad (Prod. J Gramm)

5. Action Bronson - Easy Rider

6. The Notorious B.I.G. - Big Poppa

7. Dilated Peoples - Worst Comes To Worst

8. Viceroy - Ride Wit Me (Viceroy "Jet Life" Remix)

9. 100s - Fuckin Around

10. NxWorries - Link Up

11. Pell - Eleven:11

12. Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - Sunday Candy

13. Childish Gambino - Telegraph Ave

14. Kweku Collins - Lonely Lullabies

As I was walking around São Salvador on a warm summer night, I… Wait… Why am I making stuff up? All my friends know that I’ve never been to Brazil. Not even to the American continent for that matter. But my Friend Lucas went there last summer and brought with him a huge collection of musical treasures he purchased in small music stores in and around São Paulo. Thankfully, one does not have to travel across half the globe to enjoy Brazil’s greatest gift to humanity: from samba, bossa nova to funk carioca, etc.

I actually live in Sweden, arguably Brazil’s polar opposite (weather-wise). Especially during cold winter days I like to shuffle up a couple of Brazilian songs, close my eyes and project myself to Brazil, where I’m holding a Caipirinha in my hand, instead of a snow shovel. Anyhow, it’s summertime now and I still enjoy listening to this music, as it is as much of a summer ingredient as sunburns and sand in your shoes. So do it like I do, listen to the collection of songs below and project yourself having a beautiful night in Salvador da Bahia (or at least how I imagine it to be)!

Ps: track number five is actually more of an Italian library song, but I’m sure that you’ll enjoy it nonetheless!

1)    O Povo Canta – O Telefone Tocou Navamante

2)    Jorge Ben – Por Causa de Você, Menina

3)    Os Originais Do Samba – Tenha Fé, Pois Amanhã Um Lindo Dia Vai

4)    Djavan – Serrado

5)    Vittorio Paltrinieri – Meu Brazil

6)    Novos Baianos – Swing de Campo Grande

7)    Mario Castro Neves & Samba S.A. – Candomblé

8)    Jamie & Nair – Sob O Mar

9)    Painel De Controle – Relax

10)  Famks – Labirinto

11)   Tim Maia – Bom Senso

12)  Seu Jorge – Burguesinha

13)  Wilson Simonal – Nem Vem Que Nao Tem

14)  Joao Donato – A Ra

15)  José Larralde – Quimey Neuquen

16)  Quinteto Violado – Marcha Nativa Dos Índios Quiriris

Here is a selection of songs that I find truly beautiful. Some of them have been sampled in famous hiphop songs and others are timeless protest songs. Some of the songs make you want to dance, some make you want to make love and some songs might open your eyes and make you see the hardship some people have had to endure in this world. They are all beautiful songs with a lot of soul in them.

Enjoy.

1. Wendy Rene - After Laughter Comes Tears

2. Nina Simone - Baltimore

3. Syl Johnson - Is It Because I'm Black

4. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

5. Isaac Hayes - Walk On By

6. Tyrone Evans - How Sweet It Is

7. Chackachas - Stories

8. James Brown - Blind Man Can See

9. Ann Peebles - Trouble Heartaches & Sadness

Really honored to be the first demoiselle to do a mixtape for Colombe… Hell yeah! This one is just a collection of songs that I have gathered these last few years. For some reasons they all come from Africa (except Barabass & the Happy Few who is actually a musical collective from Norway, wtf??). Otherwise, I am talking Zimbabwe, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa …and even Madagascar!! (guess which one it is). From my modest point of view, I think it is a great playlist to start the day with. Special favorite is the song from Alick Macheso : A 10 minutes track from Zimbabwe, muy perfecto to forget about the London rainy mornings. Hope you like it!

1. Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National - Igede

‪2. Desmond Ababio - Tsutsu Tsosemo

3. Ama Mbre Ewa - Etubom Rex Williams

4. Seprewa Kasa - Nkabom

‪5. Steve Dyer - Mananga

‪6. Tarika - Koba

‪7. Ami Wassidje - Tamalá

‪8. Barabass & The Happy Few-Luca Rossi

These are some jams that I’ve either been into for a while, or that I recently found. Arthur Russell, China Crisis and African Brothers Band International have been our car music for a while, whilst on tour. Silver Apples are just a classic. And the Pender Street Steppers are a recent discovery - I really like their raw production (quite refreshing in the House scene). I’d like to dedicate this mixtape to Ted, who stepped in to help with the mixing. At the risk of sounding pedantic, or stating the obvious, I recommend listening to this with good quality speakers/headphones. Anyway, I hope it tickles your pickle! Peace

1.        Lonnie Holley - Looking For All (All Rendered Truth)

2.       Arthur Russell - You and Me Both

3.       Leven Signs - This Inner Space

4.       Finis Africae . El Secreto de las 12

5.       China Crisis - African and White

6.       Francis Bebey - La Condition Masculine

7.       Pender Street Steppers - Bubble World

8.      Silver Apples - Lovefingers

9.      Run the Jewels - Love Again (Akinyele Back) (feat. Gangsta Boo)

10.    African Brothers Dance Band (International) - Me Nyame Wo Pennye Ho

These tracks are gold: deep underground, rare and moreover, precious. Every single one of these made me think to myself “this is the best track I’ve ever heard”.

Not only am I certain that you have never heard from any of these artists before, I guarantee you will play this playlist over and over again. I could give you a detailed description of these tracks; what style of music is this, which year was it released yadda yadda yadda. No written text could possibly give you this feeling of transcendence, fluidity, harmony or resurrection, so why bother. So just listen to these tracks and I’m sure you’ll find yourself in an entirely different dimension. I assure you.

1.     Love Explosion – Donnell Pitman

2.     Try It Out – Gino Soccio

3.     Do You Have Any (Ya’ Know Where I Can Get Some) – La Pamplemousse

4.     Disco-Hi-Life – Orlando Julius

5.     Love Hangover – Diana Ross

6.     Velvet Hands – Velvet Hands

7.     Trinidad Bump – Cosmic Force

8.     Le-Beat – Lo-End

9.     Usisilike – Abeti
